Dr. William H. Overholt

Senior Research Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government

Dr. Overholt has held the position of Senior Research Fellow at Harvard since 2008. Additionally, he served as the President of the Fung Global Institute in Hong Kong from 2013 to 2015. His previous roles include being the Asia Policy Distinguished Chair at RAND and serving as the Director of RAND's Center for Asia Pacific Policy from 2002 to 2008. Between 1998 and 2001, he worked as the Asia regional Head of Strategy and Economics at Nomura. Prior to that, he held the position of Managing Director and regional Head of Research at Bank Boston Singapore.

During his tenure at Bankers Trust spanning 18 years, he managed a country risk team in New York from 1980 to 1984, after which he assumed the role of regional strategist in Hong Kong. Earlier in his career, from 1971 to 1979, while at the Hudson Institute, he directed planning studies for various governmental organizations, including the U.S. Department of State, National Security Council, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and Council on International Economic Policy.

Dr. Overholt is the author or principal co-author of eight books, including The Rise of China (1998), Asia, America and the Transformation of Geopolitics (2007), Renminbi Rising (2015) and China’s Crisis of Success (2017).
